The first step to establishing your online presence is securing a domain name that fits your identity, and that can be done today. Registering your domain name is recommended because

What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is your unique address on the Internet. Many organizations find it most useful to have a domain name that is similar to their company name or perhaps a popular company
product. Example: netdotcom.com, yahoo.com, ebay.com or ibm.com
Domain names can be up to 26 letters and/or numbers long. You can also include dashes. A domain name cannot contain anything other than letters, numbers and dashes, also domain names cannot have any
spaces and cannot begin or end with a hyphen.
Prior to 2001 the .com, .net, & .org domain name extensions were the only choices available except for a few two letter country codes; .us for United States, .ca for Canada.
Because of huge increases in the number of domain name registrations; and the subsequent exhaustion of usable names containing .com .net & .org; committees that oversee world-wide Internet
standards have authorized the use of several new extensions, specifically .info and .biz. In the near future others extensions will be authorized as policy and procedures are finalized.
If your organization's name is My Company, Inc., you could register the domain name mycompany.com. Once registered you could create email addresses for specific people or
departments. Example: me@mycompany.com or sales@mycompany.com. Your customers would also be able to access your organization's Web site by
visiting www.mycompany.com with their Web browser.
